Is anybody home?

So you might be you’re wondering “whats going on in this photo? The focus seems a bit…funny.”

You’re correct, allow me to explain. For Christmas I received a “LensBaby 2.0” as a gift. A LensBaby is a [somewhat] inexpensive selective focus SLR camera lens. it has a very narrow “sweet spot” and blurs all other areas, sometimes to a very extreme degree. it also focuses using an unconventional “accordion” mechanism.

I came across these at the Photography Expo in NYC last year, and it’s funny..I wrote them off as being a novelty lens thinking to myself “Eh, it’d likely be fun for 10 minutes before embarking on its future as a dust collecting paperweight”. Had I not received it as a gift, i would have never invested in one.

It took me 2 weeks to finally attach it to my camera, I felt like I was neglecting the gift so I had to give it a shot. After toying with it for a bit, I was quite surprised. Not only was it fun, but it also changed the way i looked through my camera. Sure, you could achieve a pretty similar effect with PhotoShop, but when you look through your camera and have the effect in front of you. It changes how you compose your shots and think with your camera. I spent a couple of hours excitedly looking around my apartment and finding new ways to look at it through this lens. I plan on using this lens more in the future, and if you’re a photographer, I’d suggest checking it out. you might be surprised.

This photo was taken on my street, in fact this very tree can probably be seen in yesterdays photo!
